    Pushing the Limits of 3D Color Printing: Error Diffusion with Translucent Materials

    Accurate color reproduction is important in many applications of 3D printing, from design prototypes to 3D color copies or portraits. Although full color is available via other technologies, multi-jet printers have greater potential for graphical 3D printing, in terms of reproducing complex appearance properties. However, to date these printers cannot produce full color, and doing so poses substantial technical challenges, from the shear amount of data to the translucency of the available color materials. In this paper, we propose an error diffusion halftoning approach to achieve full color with multi-jet printers, which operates on multiple isosurfaces or layers within the object. We propose a novel traversal algorithm for voxel surfaces, which allows the transfer of existing error diffusion algorithms from 2D printing.     Morphing of Triangular Meshes in Shape Space

    We present a novel approach to morph between two isometric poses of the same non-rigid object given as triangular meshes. We model the morphs as linear interpolations in a suitable shape space S\mathcal{S}. For triangulated 3D polygons, we prove that interpolating linearly in this shape space corresponds to the most isometric morph in R3\mathbb{R}^3. We then extend this shape space to arbitrary triangulations in 3D using a heuristic approach and show the practical use of the approach using experiments. Furthermore, we discuss a modified shape space that is useful for isometric skeleton morphing. All of the newly presented approaches solve the morphing problem without the need to solve a minimization problem.Comment: Improved experimental result

    Estimation of Human Body Shape and Posture Under Clothing

    Estimating the body shape and posture of a dressed human subject in motion represented as a sequence of (possibly incomplete) 3D meshes is important for virtual change rooms and security. To solve this problem, statistical shape spaces encoding human body shape and posture variations are commonly used to constrain the search space for the shape estimate. In this work, we propose a novel method that uses a posture-invariant shape space to model body shape variation combined with a skeleton-based deformation to model posture variation. Our method can estimate the body shape and posture of both static scans and motion sequences of dressed human body scans. In case of motion sequences, our method takes advantage of motion cues to solve for a single body shape estimate along with a sequence of posture estimates. We apply our approach to both static scans and motion sequences and demonstrate that using our method, higher fitting accuracy is achieved than when using a variant of the popular SCAPE model as statistical model.Comment: 23 pages, 11 figure

    A Low-Dimensional Representation for Robust Partial Isometric Correspondences Computation

    Intrinsic isometric shape matching has become the standard approach for pose invariant correspondence estimation among deformable shapes. Most existing approaches assume global consistency, i.e., the metric structure of the whole manifold must not change significantly. While global isometric matching is well understood, only a few heuristic solutions are known for partial matching. Partial matching is particularly important for robustness to topological noise (incomplete data and contacts), which is a common problem in real-world 3D scanner data. In this paper, we introduce a new approach to partial, intrinsic isometric matching. Our method is based on the observation that isometries are fully determined by purely local information: a map of a single point and its tangent space fixes an isometry for both global and the partial maps. From this idea, we develop a new representation for partial isometric maps based on equivalence classes of correspondences between pairs of points and their tangent spaces. From this, we derive a local propagation algorithm that find such mappings efficiently. In contrast to previous heuristics based on RANSAC or expectation maximization, our method is based on a simple and sound theoretical model and fully deterministic. We apply our approach to register partial point clouds and compare it to the state-of-the-art methods, where we obtain significant improvements over global methods for real-world data and stronger guarantees than previous heuristic partial matching algorithms.Comment: 17 pages, 12 figure

    Redefining A in RGBA: Towards a Standard for Graphical 3D Printing

    Advances in multimaterial 3D printing have the potential to reproduce various visual appearance attributes of an object in addition to its shape. Since many existing 3D file formats encode color and translucency by RGBA textures mapped to 3D shapes, RGBA information is particularly important for practical applications. In contrast to color (encoded by RGB), which is specified by the object's reflectance, selected viewing conditions and a standard observer, translucency (encoded by A) is neither linked to any measurable physical nor perceptual quantity. Thus, reproducing translucency encoded by A is open for interpretation. In this paper, we propose a rigorous definition for A suitable for use in graphical 3D printing, which is independent of the 3D printing hardware and software, and which links both optical material properties and perceptual uniformity for human observers. By deriving our definition from the absorption and scattering coefficients of virtual homogeneous reference materials with an isotropic phase function, we achieve two important properties. First, a simple adjustment of A is possible, which preserves the translucency appearance if an object is re-scaled for printing. Second, determining the value of A for a real (potentially non-homogeneous) material, can be achieved by minimizing a distance function between light transport measurements of this material and simulated measurements of the reference materials. Such measurements can be conducted by commercial spectrophotometers used in graphic arts. Finally, we conduct visual experiments employing the method of constant stimuli, and derive from them an embedding of A into a nearly perceptually uniform scale of translucency for the reference materials.Comment: 20 pages (incl. appendices), 20 figures.     Statistical Shape Spaces for 3D Data: A Review

    International audienceMethods and systems for capturing 3D geometry are becoming increasingly commonplace–and with them a plethora of 3D data. Much of this data is unfortunately corrupted by noise, missing data, occlusions or other outliers. However, when we are interested in the shape of a particular class of objects, such as human faces or bodies, we can use machine learning techniques, applied to clean, registered databases of these shapes, to make sense of raw 3D point clouds or other data. This has applications ranging from virtual change rooms to motion and gait analysis to surgical planning depending on the type of shape. In this chapter, we give an overview of these techniques, a brief review of the literature, and comparative evaluation of two such shape spaces for human faces

    Recent advances in confocal and multi-photon microscopy, together with fluorescent probe development, have enabled cancer biology studies to go beyond the culture dish and interrogate cancer-associated processes in the complex in vivo environment. Regulation of the tumor suppressor protein E-cadherin plays an important role in cancer development and progression, and may contribute to the decision between ‘single cell’ and ‘collective invasion’ in vivo. Mounting evidence from in vitro and in vivo experiments places the two nonreceptor protein tyrosine kinases Src and Focal Adhesion Kinase at the heart of E-cadherin regulation and the crosstalk between integrins and cadherins. Here we discuss recent insights, attained using high-resolution fluorescent in vivo imaging, into the regulation of E-cadherin and collective invasion.     We propose a novel approach to automatically fill holes in triangulated models. Each hole is filled using a minimum energy surface that is obtained in three steps. First, we unfold the hole boundary onto a plane using energy minimization. Second, we triangulate the unfolded hole using a constrained Delaunay triangulation. Third, we embed the triangular mesh as a minimum energy surface in R 3. When embedding the triangular mesh, any energy function can be used to estimate the missing data. We use a variational multi-view approach to estimate the missing data.
